Word up! "w" instead of "l" – error message

I get the error "oops try again, it looks like first is "w" instead of "l"

pyg = 'ay'

original = raw_input('Enter a word:')

if len(original) > 0 and original.isalpha():
    word = original.lower()
    first = "word"[0]
    print word
    print original
    print 'empty'

i just put the two prints in there to test the results and it does my words – one with upper case, one without.

Word up!did you create a variable"word"-error message.how do i resolve this?

this line:

first = "word"[0]

you want to the first letter of your word variable, not of the string word. remove the quotation marks (")

Is this supposed to be changing my word into lower case and then printing?

yea, you did that. That is all fine, but you also need the first letter of word (the variable) for a later exercise.
