Why do we need href, type, and rel?

<link href="/style.css" />

I notice that, after I type the above, and run the compiler, the webpage looks exactly as intended. If I already have the desired end result, why do I need to include the type and rel portions?

If you do a google search
html link is rel type mandatory site:stackoverflow.com
you will get a load of articles......
and seems that it is Browser and HTML-version specific.....
