Why can't you set height and width properties on inline elements?

What is the need to separate inline elements from inline-block elements?

It seems to be that the only better of inline-block elements over inline elements is that inline-block allows us to set height and width properties, is that correct?

If so, isn’t it more efficient to remove the need for inline-block elements and just allow us to set height and width to inline elements?

Inline elements have no width or height property; correct.

That would go against their intended purpose: text level semantics, largely.
