When would we actually use a static method?

I don’t really see a point to use static methods. Are there situations where they are preferred?

I think there’s a fair few stackoverflow queries on the same sort of thing. The best reasoning I’ve come across is to avoid polluting your namespace with extra functions that could instead be bound to the relevant class.
