Question

When should I use named colors vs hexadecimal colors vs rgb colors?

Answer

This decision is mostly based on personal preference. A few tips to help you decide:

  • Named colors (example: cornflowerblue, orangered, gold, etc) only have 140 colors to choose from, although the names may be easier to remember than strings of numbers or characters.
  • Hexadecimal and rgb colors make it easier to get the specific/exact color you want (as they have ~16.7 million color choices).
  • Hexadecimal colors are more compact than rgb colors and may be easier to copy from various color palette programs i.e. copying one number vs three numbers.
