What different?

<---link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="stylesheet.css"/--->

<---style--->span {color: red;font-family: cursive}<---/style--->

<---title--->Even Fancier Fonts<---/title--->

Much of this is regular text, but some of it is fancy!
We can use our newly fancified font to add some
flair to our website. It'd be a royal pain
to make each of these span tags fancy individually,
but it's a cinch with CSS!

<---/body--->

<---/html--->

I use style tag span{color: red;font-family: cursive}
and i got same result .
what different between stylesheet and style tag?
By the way nice Q&A i like it

let me get this right, you ask for the difference between:

 <link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="stylesheet.css"/>

and:

<style></style>

the difference is that in the first case (let's call it link) your css code is in a external file (stylesheet.css) and in case of <style> the css code is inside of the html document. This is called a internal stylesheet.

In codecademy IDE (Integrated developments environment) the external stylesheet may seem like just a tab, in reality it is another file. I would recommend using external stylesheet, html files and stylesheet can be come quit big, having css and html in file is then really unclear, and not nice to read/edit
