The answer is kind of in your question. A UI designer focuses on designing user interfaces while a software designers focuses on designing software.

To use Codecademy as an example, a UI designer might map out the interface of a course (how it looks to the user and what they can interact with) while a software designer might map out the “insides” (how the courses marks completion, etc).
