What am I doing wrong?

So I'm doing this exercise, and in theory it should work, and by all accounts it seems the exact code I use works for other people. The code is:

from random import randint

board = []

for x in range(0, 5):
    board.append("O" * 5)

def print_board(board):
    for row in board:
        print " ".join(row)

def random_row(board):
    return randint(0, len(board) - 1)

def random_col(board):
    return randint(0, len(board[0]) - 1)

ship_row = random_row(board)
ship_col = random_col(board)
guess_row = int(raw_input("Guess Row:")) - 1
guess_col = int(raw_input("Guess Col:")) - 1

print ship_row
print ship_col

# Write your code below!
if (guess_row == ship_row) and (guess_col == ship_col):
    print 'Congratulations! You sank my battleship!'
    print 'You missed my battleship!'
    board[guess_row][guess_col] = 'X'
    print board

I'm getting this error message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "python", line 33, in
TypeError: 'str' object does not support item assignment

I don't know, but shouldn't it be able to replace it? Line 33 is board[guess_row][guess_col] = 'X'

you appended strings to your board:

board.append("O" * 5)

while you should have appended lists:

board.append(["O"] * 5)

I see, thanks! Though I would put the blame on codecademy here because I use ', but it was long ago enough that I don't remember properly
