$(document).ready(function(){
$('div').hover(
function(){
$(this).addClass('active');
},
function(){
$(this).removeClass('active');

Hi there, it seems I just got pretty much the same error, after typing the same code. Here's the link for my excercise:
https://www.codecademy.com/en/courses/web-beginner-en-JwhI1/1/2?curriculum_id=50a3fad8c7a770b5fd0007a1

It's a 'Hover' lesson of 'jQuery', lesson 'jQuery events'. I'm using Edge browser on Windows 10 64bit.

EDIT

I just tried to use Firefox and it works fine, so I guess it's Edge who's not letting us learn jQuery.
