I can seem to progress from thiis point. I always recieve an error message saying that the variable or method is incorrect.

syntactically incorrect, but produces the error message "unexpected
tINTEGER, expecting $end", and not the one you are stating.

You need to provide more information about your problem.

Thanks it worked when i used a variable

x = 53%10

It should work regardless if you used a variable.
