Syntax error: can't assign to function call

This is my code not sure what they mean by that syntax error. I am on Part 9 of list and dictionaries More with 'for'

start_list = [5, 3, 1, 2, 4]
square_list = []

for number in start_list:
start_list.append(number) = number ** 2

print square_list

The list is still empty. Your code is appending the wrong list.
