"str object has no attribute append" error in "Danger, Will Robinson"

#1

All I get is an error reading “str object has no attribute append” when the guess is wrong. Help?
from random import randint

board = []

for x in range(0, 5):
board.append([“O”] * 5)

def print_board(board):
for row in board:
print " ".join(row)

print_board(board)

def random_row(board):
return randint(0, len(board) - 1)

def random_col(board):
return randint(0, len(board[0]) - 1)

ship_row = random_row(board)
ship_col = random_col(board)
print ship_row
print ship_col

guess_row = int(raw_input("Guess Row: "))
guess_col = int(raw_input("Guess Col: "))

Write your code below!

if guess_row == ship_row and guess_col == ship_col:
print ‘Congratulations! You sank my battleship!’
else:
print ‘You missed my battleship!’
board[ship_row][ship_col].append(‘X’)
print board

#2

board[ship_row][ship_col] is a string ("O"), strings do not have append method, .append() is for lists

#3

How do I replace the O with an X than?

#4

the same way we re-assign a variable:

x = 5
# lets re-assign x
x = 3

we can update element in the list the same way:

the_list[index] = "new value"
