SQLite and template literals

I’m working through the Expresso project, and I’ve noticed that SQLite really hates interpolation with ES6 template literals. Sometimes it works absolutely fine, removing the need to provide an extra parameters argument to SQLite methods, but sometimes it fails all my tests because of SQL syntax errors.
For instance:

"SELECT * FROM Timesheet WHERE employee_id = $employeeId", {$employeeId: req.params.$employeeId}...

passes the mocha tests, but this fails them:

`SELECT * FROM Timesheet WHERE employee_id = ${req.params.employeeId}`

Can anyone with more experience than me explain what’s going on here? Thanks!
