Routes seem outdated unless I'm missing something

I’m going through the routes part for ASP.NET. This information seems rather outdated because it’s extremely inefficient and messy. I talked with someone in the industry, and like I thought, routes are kept in a separate file usually. If the content isn’t outdated, when would I be establishing routes in the file itself? If it is outdated, can we expect the content to get updated?
