Question about Mac Terminal message: "To update your account to use zsh, please run `chsh -s /bin/zsh`."

I am new in the programming world! I am trying to use Terminal in my Mac, and I have the following message: “To update your account to use zsh, please run chsh -s /bin/zsh.”.
I have been doing online research, but I am very confused.

Is there any difference between this change and Bash?

Welcome to the forums!

Are you trying to install something? (like Jupyter Notebook for example)

Mac’s haven’t used the bash shell for a couple OS iterations. They now use zsh

See this and this and here.

Thanks. That was exactly what I was trying to do, but to upgrade takes too long. Is that normal?

Hm, that’s a good question b/c I don’t recall in my experience.
For me, one day the Anaconda Navigator app wouldn’t launch b/c it wasn’t compatible with Catalina and the zsh shell. (There’s a whole lot of articles out there about that situation. I read them all. lol).
I ended up following the suggestions in one article and downloaded ‘oh my zsh’ and then I was able to run/initiate Jupyter from my terminal. Navigator only started working recently after I re-installed the latest version.

Mostly now I use Google Colab though.
