Python PygLatin 10/11 help!

pyg = 'ay'

original = raw_input('Enter a word:')

if len(original) > 0 and original.isalpha():
word = original.lower()
first = word[0]
new_word = word + first + pyg
new_word = [1:len(new_word)]
print new_word
print 'empty'

It says the syntax [1:len(new_word)] is invalid. Could someone please help?

in this part you are assingning to new_word a sliced part of what?

You need add new_word before:

new_word = new_word[1:len(new_word)]

A sliced part of the new_word that is in the previous line.

Well, lauburu already gave you the answer, but remember that before brackets you need to put from what you are slicing.
Like in this case
