Pyglatin variables within if statement

#1

What does it mean by putting the variables within the if statement. It's incredibly vague

pyg = 'ay'

original = raw_input('Enter a word:')

if len(original > 0 and original.isalpha():
    first = original[0]
    word = original.lower()
    print original
else:
    print 'empty'

This is a perfectly good example, sans syntax error, missing ) on len().
