PS1 variable: How is it useful, and what does it stand for?

What is the point of the PS1 var? Just to customize the style of the command prompt to personal preference or is it necessary? Also, what does the P and S stand for (if anything)? Thanks in advance, I’m still new to learning bash commands, and I have many questions.

Hey speedy56coder
this may be of interest:

PS1

The primary prompt string. The default value is ‘\s-\v$ ’. See Controlling the Prompt, for the complete list of escape sequences that are expanded before PS1 is displayed.

Does this help?
