Is this what you meant to write?

symbol_filter = lambda { |x| x.is_a? Symbol }
my_array.select(&symbol_filter)

Why is there a Symbol after x.is_a? ?

It's like an if conditional.

If x is a member of the Symbol class then append it to the return array..
