Hi there! I really need some advice or motivation for continuing to learn here in Codecademy.
I’m 31 years old and undergraduate (took Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering but drop out due to private matters) and since then I only took part-time jobs: as cashier in a supermarket, as factory worker, even did work in a Garbage disposal job. I didn’t notice I already hit my 30s then. Right now I’m learning HTML hoping to become a dev in the future, I will also join a coding bootcamp later this to learn further but my question is, is too late for me to start? or should I pursue this path? Is not having a College Degree and only certificates and portfolio projects can land me a job? oh btw I’m currently living here in Japan.
Welcome to the forums!
I can’t speak to working in Japan, but I can speak to working in the US. In my field of work (US government contracting) most hiring managers will expect a degree. That said, many organizations will add the clause ‘or equivalent’ or 'or ‘equivalent experience.’ This is where a portfolio of work would be key to show that you know your stuff, and then you would have to pass the job interview. I am not saying it would be easy, but it is definitely possible. I have in fact hired a person that did not have a college degree to work for me (not for programming, but related) because they had the skills, background, and attitude I needed.
Again, I’m speaking to my experience and area of the world, and I expect it varies by country and industry.
Hi there!
It’s absolutely not late for you to start! the beauty of coding and pursuing a code-related career, is that employers are simply looking for someone who “can code”. doesn’t matter how old you are or from what educational background you’re coming from!
Thanks for the reply! it means so much to me
