MIPS --- using "and" to determine whether odd or even

How can the result of this:

andi $t0 , $t1 , 0x0001

be used to determine whether a number is odd or even?

Using BITWISE AND (&), a number & 1 will return 1 if the number is odd, zero if even.

>>> 2 & 1
0
>>> 3 & 1
1
>>>

This is because all odd numbers have bit-1 set.

>>> int('0xFFFF', 16) & int('0x0001',16)
1
>>>
