I'm not sure why it's not working.

It is returning the rror:
compute_bill(['apple']) resulted in a TypeError: list indices must be integers, not str

shopping_list = ["banana", "orange", "apple"]

stock = {
    "banana": 6,
    "apple": 0,
    "orange": 32,
    "pear": 15
}

prices = {
    "banana": 4,
    "apple": 2,
    "orange": 1.5,
    "pear": 3
}

def compute_bill(food):
    total=0
    for i in food:
        total+= food[i]
    return total

the function parameter food, what kind of values do you think it will have?

the error message is actually pretty useful:

def compute_bill(food):
    total=0
    for i in food:
        total+= food[i]
    return total

# function call
print compute_bill(['apple'])

so, the function call represents the customer buying an apple.

so then we want to add the price of every product to total
