Make sure that you entered a word containing only letters

s = 'Charlie'
print s[1:len(s)]

the title is the error I get.
the 'l' in Charlie is el not one.

What am I doing wrong?

perhaps s isn't the variable name that they ask you to create? One-letter variables are usually something to avoid, better to name them after what they represent. i can sometimes be used for indexes or iterators and sometimes x is fine, for example in some short math function.

this dose not work it is pointless
