MadLibs assistance

I thought I had a better grasp of the idea but I am failing to get it.

Mad Libs exercise

public class MadLibs {
  /*
This program generates a mad libbed story
Author: unknown
Date: 5/4/2020
  */
  	public static void main(String[] args){

      //The template for the story
      String story = "This morning "+name1+" woke up feeling "+adjective1+". 'It is going to be a "+adjective2+" day!' Outside, a bunch of "+noun1+"s were protesting to keep "+noun2+" in stores. They began to "+verb1+" to the rhythm of the "+noun3+", which made all the "+noun4+"s very "+adjective3+". Concerned, "+name1+" texted "+name2+", who flew "+name1+" to "+place1+" and dropped "+name1+" in a puddle of frozen "+noun5+". "+name1+" woke up in the year "+number+", in a world where "+noun6+"s ruled the world.";

// Name
String name1 = "Lenny";
// Adjectives
String adjective1 = "stupid";
String adjective2 = "simple";
String adjective3 = "hairy";
// Verb
String verb1 = "running";
// Nouns
String noun1 = "table";
String noun2 = "sofa";
String noun3 = "bed";
String noun4 = "chair";
String noun5 = "ottoman";
String noun6 = "lazy boy";
// 2nd Name
String name = "Margret";
// Number
int number = 5;
// Place
String place1 = "Palacio de los jugos";
    }
}

One of the many errors that I am getting is

MadLibs.java:12: error: cannot find symbol
      String story = "This morning "+name1+" woke up feeling "+adjective1+". 'It is going to be a "+adjective2+" day!' Outside, a bunch of "+noun1+"s were protesting to keep "+noun2+" in stores. They began to "+verb1+" to the rhythm of the "+noun3+", which made all the "+noun4+"s very "+adjective3+". "+name1+" woke up in the year "+number+", in a world where "+noun6+"s ruled the world.";
                                     ^

I don’t want to post further errors until I get passed this one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have an error message about the first thing your code does, then I’m a little confused about why there’s so much code after it.

Run your code after each thing you do, don’t write more code before what you’ve already written is working.

You might start by writing code which does nothing other than create a string variable. Then, when that compiles and runs, you could initialize it with a value. Print out your variable. Compile, run. Maybe you want to concatenate several strings, so you could do that with one extra string literal.

@ionatan Thank you for your prompt reply. I did what you suggested. Rather, I set to print the story without assigning anything to the variables.

Write less code. make it smaller until it is small enough for you to fully see and understand it.
Start by making a program that DOES compile, then make small changes towards what you want, running it between each change.

If you have more code than you’re willing to read and debug, then you can’t really expect to fix it. Narrow down the problem, consider what operation you’re making, and then write code which makes only that operation and only makes it once.

Also, are you reading your error messages? They’re describing a problem.

If you have two strings, "a" and "b", how do you obtain "ab"?
Write a program that does that.
That’s the operation you’re carrying out, isn’t it? So that’s what you need to be finding out how to do. But bring it down to a scale you can handle while you’re figuring out how the operations you need work so that the only thing that’s in your code is that specific operation and nothing else that you can consider.

When you have it working you can make small edits to it towards what you mean to do. Or apply what you learned to the bigger thing.
