Jumbotron css rules

Why don't I have to do ".jumbotron .container" when I style the text in jumbotron all of the time? So far I have only had to do it when I'm moving the text in jumbotron around.

You were actually moving the .container around, that's why you had to specify it. Add another line to that rule so that you can see the whole container:

.jumbotron .container {
    position: relative;
    top: 100px;
    outline: red solid 5px;

You can select anything and put outlines around it to help you see what is going on.

.jumbotron {
     outline: yellow solid 5px;
