So as the title says, is there a discord for paid members, the current one is full of stuff unrelated to “codeacademy”, spams, bots and people from other courses like FreeCodeCamp.
I don’t mind but it would be nice to get to speak to people on the same level, and this forum does not provide the social engagements.
No, there isn’t a separate Discord for paid members.
I’m not sure what you’ve encountered on the server (I only follow a few channels), but I’ve mostly seen posts from people in the Python, SQL, DA, and DS channels discussing lessons and projects and asking for pair programming buddies. The mods over there are pretty good at catching spam and bots…and making sure topics stay relevant to coursework.
Is that necessarily a bad thing at the end of the day?
While we try to moderate things that are totally unrelated to both Codecademy or learning to code we encourage any kind of “learning to code” posts as there’s more to the learning to code process than a particular course - things like personal projects (where I suspect a lot of the unrelated posts you’re talking about) are just as important to learning. This is especially true if someone’s end goal is getting a job given the importance of building a portfolio as projects that are personal and don’t come from a course are quite key to this.
At the end of the day my take (and of course this is just my opinion! ) is that as mods our primary goal is to support those learning to code any way we can, regardless of the origin of any questions people might be asking (of course Codecademy is our focus and having questions from other places doesn’t limit anyone from asking questions about Codecademy or connecting with other CC learners, just means we’re happy to facilitate any kind of support happening in the server that we can).
Getting rid of these as quickly as we possibly can is something we’re actively working on, for example through implementing more restrictive automod rules. All moderators are volunteers spread across timezones at the end of the day so we can hardly guarantee 24/7 coverage but we’re generally pretty good at getting rid of junk. Reporting anything that you see (by DMing ModMail at the top of the member list) helps flag things to us and get them removed faster!
And I don’t have a problem with it if that is the stance of the discord rules, I was simply asking if there was a discord for paid courses so I didn’t need to see the scam post.
also my issue with random topics not related is that they populate stuff that is way to advance for the group, like the otherday someone was asking how to do some crazy thing in javascript and they was doing it in nextJS.
Another option is to start a conversation with fellow learners in whatever Group/cohort you’re in here–Full-Stack Engineer Group, Front-End Group, etc.
Trying this but a large % are different time zones i found someone and weve been chatting but nothing has come about it yet other than sharing some resources.
