Is it possible to change the coding UI to white instead of grey

The Codecademy editor doesn’t currently have a light theme. You might be able to use a browser plugin like Stylish to change the colors, though.

It’s interesting you bring up the plug-in. It may do some digging for us. I was going to suggest inspecting and creating selector rules in the User Style Sheets, but that is discrete across different browsers so a nightmare to explore. Good suggestion, @zystvan, and one worth following up.

The most abundantly clear selector rule would be,

* {
  color: black;
  background-color: white;
  background-image: none;

Untested, at this point, so only theoretical. It declares all text (and technically, borders, too) to be black in color; all background colors will be white; and no background images will be permitted.

If this turns out to be failing when challenged by inline styles, or it happens to be written higher in cascade because of other plugins, then we have to pull the !important card.

* {
  color: black !important;
  background-color: white !important;
  background-image: none !important;

Not the sort of thing we expect to see in a production style sheet, but not out of place in a User Style Sheet. What the user wants, the user gets. Period.
