Indexing system

When using the indexing system of python I find myself quite confused. The beginning of you're strings will start with 0, easy enough, and yet how is it codeacademy then goes and tells me that Y is the 5th number in the string "Monty"

M- 0
o- 1
n -2
t -3
y -4

(5??) --- Am I just being a dingus or is the indexing system a tad bit difficult to explain correctly?

It is the 5th number, which is 4.
