How do you focus w/ ADHD (and other issues)?

I always have this problem when i’m coding or just doing anything in general. My thoughts and the other alters (we’re a DID system) fill my head till it’s all i can think about so I drown 'em out w/ music. But then the music distracts me. It’s not any better in the rare instance that my mind is silent coz then I get antsy. Any suggestions?

When entering a venture with preconditions it is no longer an adventure, but a guided tour. We all have some or other handicap we accept as being in our path. This just softens the blow of our failures. We should not confuse this with our failings. The former is incidental, the latter is inherent. Rather than setting up for failure owing to one handicap or other, set up for success in spite of them. There will be failures abound, but nobody can accuse one of having failings.

Lower your use of social media and increase meditation and reading.
This is not the easiest way but you’ll see a change in your ability to focus.

I have attention issues too! Especially with focusing on reading material. I used Text-to-Speech or screenreaders whenever possible. If I’m not focusing, I’ll turn it up until its like the learning material is being screamed directly into my brain. Though, it’s always a struggle regardless, and there’s no shame in re-reading or re-listening to something until it finally sticks. Even if you need to hear it a few times before actually listening to it all, what’s important is staying committed.

:ear: I consider hearing something and listening to it to be different. You can hear people talk, but you might not actually be actively listening and engaging in what you hear. It’s important to stay concious of it, too. “Am I just hearing this, or am I actually listening?”

However, if I need to focus on something not related to listening to a lecture, like coding, music does usually help. Sometimes different genres help in different ways. Pop might get my energy up, but Jazz will keep me from stressing about all the tasks. Sometime ambient noise, like coffee shop sounds, will make me feel like I should be focusing and help me concentrate more on what I’m trying to accomplish.

Hope this helps!

I agree with @meguladon about the Text-to-Speech. This is the main reason I started using Edge browser. It has a really good Text-to-Speech feature built in with plenty of natural voice options, and its free. When listening to an article, if I come across something I’m having trouble grasping, I write down key words/topics and then get on Google and search each one until I understand the concepts better.

The pomodoro timer works well for me. I start at 20min work/5min break, then work up to 45/15. I’ll do this for as long as I can until my brain hurts, or I’m just not retaining anything. You can also try binaural beats or brown noise like @ruby9900592668 mentioned. I enjoy those playing low in the background.

Other than that… sleep, hydration, and exercise keep my ADD in check…

Thank you for the tip on Edge! I too have bad focus and concentration and what I would normally do is read the text out loud but that is honestly very draining of my energy sometimes. I find that I like to hear voice overs more than reading because i feel that I can connect to the material more.

I find making notes helps - like a list of exact things I am trying to cover, and when I find myself getting off task I can pull my attention back faster onto the task.

Oh, as I understand you, music helps me, if not, I just listen to a different genre or something more energetic, or vice versa. You can also play some videos or podcasts in the background :person_shrugging:
