To my knowledge it uses your Codecademy username.

codecademy uses single sign-on, which allows you to log in the main website and the forum with the same account.

thus changing your username in the main site account settings:

https://www.codecademy.com/account

should be reflected here on the forum

I wonder whether the forum software (Discourse?) retains the username somewhere separately, and uses a different field as an identifier for SSO (like email address maybe)?

I would guess @factoradic might know?

You might want to sign out (both main site and forum), and then sign back in. That sometimes helps
