I don’t understand if I use meal or itself on line 7 and I tried both without any success

This:

meal + meal * tax

doesn’t mean anything, as you are not doing anything with it. It asks you to assign the value of meal. To assign the value of a variable in python, follow this template:

VARIABLE = VALUE

In other words, what the instructions are asking you to do is something like this:

meal = meal + meal * tax

Or you could do it in short form:

meal += meal * tax

wow! I feel really dumb. It was that easy. I just had to add the meal = and it worked
