General Error in the Interface for this lesson

I get the following error message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "python", line 24, in <module>
ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'SCT'

This has has been happening since we started using the int() in Lesson part 8/19 ("… and seek!")
Additionally, when I hit run, the interface is thinking for minutes, and I’m not able to enter in my guess column or row.

<What do you expect to happen instead?>
Not this issue.FYI - I have submitted three bug reports already, but posting here too so others can see.

From the very beginning I’ve been at odds with how this module builds the conditionals (control flow). Consider…

if guess_row == ship_row and guess_col == ship_col:
    print "Congratulations! You sank my battleship!"   
elif guess_row not in range(5) or \
    guess_col not in range(5):
    print "Oops, that's not even in the ocean."
else:
    print "You missed my battleship!"
    board[guess_row][guess_col] = "X"
print_board(board)
