Why do we need to grab the first letter of the word?

pyg = 'ay'

original = raw_input('Enter a word:')

if len(original) > 0 and original.isalpha():# output longer than 0, containing text
    word = original.lower() # prints lowercase
    first = word[0]
    print word
else:
    print 'empty'

We need a copy of it so we can add it (concatenate) to the string later.

Thank you, that makes sense.
