Why do we need to use the cat function when using the redirection function on a .txt file?

Because the cat function reads the text file. There are likely other ways of doing it, but this way is often the simplest

If you are asking why echo can’t be used, that’s because with echo we are providing the string to redirect. With a text file, we need to read the file itself then redirect it

so you can concatenate files

Hi! Am I the only one who made the mistake of using > instead of >> and overwriting the rivers? Now there are no rivers displayed when I type in cat rivers.txt and I cannot continue with the course. HELP.

Click “Get Unstuck” and then “reset exercise”. (which resets that page).
