Hi! I’m intrigued as to how the number of websites can go down so much in 2013 and 2015. How is this data sourced?

The number of registered domains is a known quantity that can be sourced from the DNS system and from search engine indices, independently. The system would know exactly how many domains are propagated across it. Search engines would have crawl data that could not only tell them how many sites there are, but how many pages there are, to within a small margin or error.

What happened in 2010 that caused a decrease in total web pages?

Welcome, @theewhitesnake,

Off the cuff, not looking at the data, one could attribute it to rapid growth of dynamic web and a notable decrease in static web pages (which may be due to being removed from the index as abandoned). Just a thought.

It’s interesting to see that before 2018, that the number of websites were not consistently increasing!

Guys i am new to the forum just started full stack engineer and at the very beinning of the course we see a graph representing total number of websites in the world and the source of graph that mentioned there is not working i guess… heres the source if you remember https://www.internetlivestats.com/ please guide me if its working or not.

Interesting fact that only 18% of total websites are active… ! With our future knowledges, we maybe able to reach 18.1%

I asked ChatGPT this question and got an interesting reply. See Internet Site Decrease. It would be interesting to look at what was happening in the world in the years of decreases to see what correlations there might be.

As cited on https://www.internetlivestats.com/total-number-of-websites/:

Periodic drops in the total count can depend on various factors, including an improvement in NetCraft’s handling of wildcard hostnames. For example, in August 2012, over 40 million hostnames on only 242 IP addresses were removed from the Survey.

On that same page the difference in numbers in websites between 2012 and 2013 decreases from 697,089,489 to 672,985,183, less than 40 million, so while some addresses were removed others were still being added.

Eliminate the outlier years 2009, 2012 and 2013, where drops could be accounted for by similar purging and improvements in hostname handling (and for 2009, perhaps some delayed effect of the 2008 U.S. recession) and growth appears to be continual.

Bonjour à tous,

je m’appel TAIWE, je débute tout juste maintenant, donc pour l’instant, je me concentre principalement sur la revue des concepts théoriques. Où en êtes-vous actuellement et comment se déroule votre progression ?

Bien à vous,

The source site isn’t working for me either
