In the explanation I think there is an error. Shouldn’t validate= … be const validator = and validator be called in the schema?

// Define validator
validate = function (value) {
  ...
}

// Add validator to Schema
const DinosaurSchema = new Schema({
  count: {
    type: Number,
    validate: [validator, 'custom err msg']
  }
});

I think you’re right:
I went through the exercises twice and the showcased example seems to contain a mistake.

// Define validator
const validator = function (value) {
  ...
}

// Add validator to Schema
const DinosaurSchema = new Schema({
  count: {
    type: Number,
    validate: [validator, 'custom err msg']
  }
});

This is how it should be, otherwise I don’t see how it could run successfully.
