I was confused as to the root of what was going on here and this stack overflow thread has some really good answers. Basically it comes to the fact that naturally python assigns a reference to the object and even though characters are immutable objects, lists are mutable so since it’s referencing the same object in memory it is changed.

This is also how the select_space function works without returning a board.
