Why focus on minimizing MSE vs. simply SSE? Since MSE is SSE divided by a constant, finding the minimum should be invariant to multiplication/division by any scalar. In other words, I should be able to minimize SSE, SSE/N (or MSE), SSE/2N, SSE/3N, etc., and obtain the same optimal values.
