on step 4. they ask to define newTail as the head of the list in case there is no head. But since the newTail will be added to the end, wont the new this.head = the currentTail?

this.head and this.tail are two different properties of the DoublyLinkedList class. They can be assigned the same node, and indeed the list will have only one node acting as both the head and the tail.
Thsi may feel redundant, but I can assume this is helpful in case you want to addToHead() or addToTail() , since it will indicate if you want to add a new node before or after the only node currently in the DoublyLinkedList.
