I would like to have a row printed out only when the distance of the airline being worked with is not zero. I’ve tried:
FROM flights where sum>0
FROM flights where total_united_flight_distance>0
FROM flights where sum(CASE WHEN carrier = ‘UA’ THEN distance ELSE 0 END)>0

nothing is working.
any ideas?

when you want to filter a result of group by, you have to use ‘having’ clause, right after the group by:

            select origin,
                   sum(distance) as total_flight_distance,
                   sum(case when carrier ='DL' then distance else 0 end) as 'total_united_flight_distance'
            from flights 
            group by origin having total_united_flight_distance > 0;

the ‘where’ can use where there aren’t any group by
