"Oops, Try again. It Looks like new_word containts "" instead of "ayday"!

I basically know what is happening, the program is storing my last words and almost like erasing them. It went from ay to y to "". Soooooooo I don't know whats happening...

pyg = 'ay'

original = raw_input('Enter a word:')

if len(original) > 0 and original.isalpha():
    word = original.lower()
    first = word[0]
    new_world = word + first + pyg
    new_word = new_word[1:len(new_word)]
    print new_word
else:
    print 'empty'
    print original
