Deploy a website 5/7 git commit=nothing to commit

#1

Hello all,

I am currently stuck on 5/7 on "Deploy a Website". This specific assignment has caused me more hassle than all of the previous assignments put together, a combination of vague directions along with things seeming to just not work even when you do them correctly has left me stuck at every question in this.

My current issue is in 5/7 I cannot create the git commit. I've used the cd command to make sure that I'm in the "personal-website" directory and I've followed the instructions quite literally, yet it's not working.

Can someone tell me where I seemed to go wrong?

$ cd
$ cd personal-website
$ git add .
$ git commit -m "Save my work"
On branch master

Initial commit

nothing to commit

Before you effect a commit, there should be some changes to that branch file(s). Please could you supply the URL to the exercise so I could try it out!" :wink:

Thank you! :slight_smile:

The URL is https://www.codecademy.com/courses/deploy-a-website/lessons/github-pages/exercises/create-account?action=lesson_resume

Okay, try these:

$ cd personal-website/

$ git init

$ git remote add origin https://github.com/your-user-name/you-user-name/your-user-name.github.io.git

$ git remote -v

$ git add .

git commit -m "Save my work"

With the first line, you navigate to the intended directory. With the second, you initialize the repository. For a check, on the third line, add that origin. The fourth, should fetch and push. The fifth, adds all files for commit. Lastly, commit with a commit message.

I hope this helps! :slight_smile:
