Confused a little

Ok so I don’t understand why all of a sudden to link to another page we are using a # symbol
a href="#contact" to be specific in this lesson.
Why is it not a href="./contact.html> ?

That’s because it’s not a link to another page, but a link to a different section on the current page.
It links to the element with id="contact".
