i dont understand why this is correct. can anyone explain? i think i understand the for function its just that i dont see what does "a" have to do with me printing the list once

I suggest googling for python for-loop, look for things like tutorials etc, those will contain exactly the text you're asking for - making the question not really worth answering and asking it is also delaying your answer when it's already available. Try a search engine first for anything you wonder. Some things are difficult to create a search query for or are more of advice nature, that's when asking makes sense.

Beginner here, might require correction!

If I have understood correcly, the "a" in "for a in names:" is a variable created for the purpose of the loop. Each time the intepreter examines an item in the list, the contents of this variable change to match the item.
