"Oops, try again. average([3, 0]) returned None instead of 1.5 as expected."

I don't really know what's wrong with this one. Could someone explain why it isn't averaging at all? Thanks!

# Add your function below!
def average(numbers):
    total = sum(numbers)
    total = float(total)
    total / len(numbers)

@oliverhawkfield ,

You need to assign the value of this expression to total ...

total / len(numbers)

... otherwise, total is left unchanged.

After that, return the value of total.

Ooooh thank you! That makes so much sense ^O^

tray this :grin:
def average(numbers):
total = sum(numbers)
total = float(total)
total =total / len(numbers)
return total
print "tyler average %s" %average(tyler["homework"])
print "alice average %s" %average(alice["homework"])
print "lloyd average %s" %average(lloyd["homework"])
