# Average returning None instead of the average

#1

"Oops, try again. average([3, 0]) returned None instead of 1.5 as expected."

I don't really know what's wrong with this one. Could someone explain why it isn't averaging at all? Thanks!

def average(numbers):

total = float(total)
total / len(numbers)``````

You need to assign the value of this expression to `total` ...

``total / len(numbers)``

... otherwise, `total` is left unchanged.

After that, `return` the value of `total`.

Ooooh thank you! That makes so much sense ^O^

tray this
def average(numbers):
total = sum(numbers)
total = float(total)
total =total / len(numbers)
