the code works as far as format goes I can pass the module put it won't make anything lower case
pyg = 'ay'

original = raw_input('Enter a word:')
word = original.lower()
first = word[0]
if len(original) > 0 and original.isalpha():
print original
print 'empty'

I tried printing word instead of original but it just printed out word not the user input and now it works same code no idea

in your if block you are doing

print original

but then you have stored the lowercased word in a variable called word

word = original.lower()

to correct this you rather have to print word in your if block

print word # instead of original
