I get "SyntaxError: missing : after property id". However, I can't seem to find where it's missing.

var cashRegister = {
    total: 0,
//insert the add method here
var add: function(itemCost){
        itemCost+ total
    },
    scan: function (item) {
        switch (item) {
        case "eggs":
            this.add(0.98);
            break;

        case "milk":
            this.add(1.23);
            break;
   case "choolate" :
            this.add(4.99);
            break;

        case "magazine":
        this.add(0.45);
        break;
        }
        return true;
    }
};

//Scan 2 eggs and 3 magazines
cashRegister.scan("eggs");
cashRegister.scan("eggs");
cashRegister.scan("magazine");
cashRegister.scan("magazine");
cashRegister.scan("magazine");
//Show the total bill
console.log('Your bill is '+cashRegister.total);

@marisela25,

When creating an object, each property has a name, followed by : and then the value of that property.

A JavaScript method is a property containing a function definition. So

var add: function(itemCost) - just remove var before add.

Also look to this line

itemCost+ total

Shuold be

return this.total += itemCost;

add: function(itemCost) {
   return this.total += itemCost;
},
