there are no error messages but every time I even type numbers under 5 or whatever, it still says at the bottom of the window "Oops, that's not even in the ocean." when it obviously is.

i need help with getting it to say its not in the ocean ONLY when the number is actually not in range. thank you for any help. my code is below:

from random import randint

board = []

for x in range(0, 5):
    board.append(["O"] * 5)

def print_board(board):
    for row in board:
        print " ".join(row)

print_board(board)

def random_row(board):
    return randint(0, len(board) - 1)

def random_col(board):
    return randint(0, len(board[0]) - 1)

ship_row = random_row(board)
ship_col = random_col(board)
guess_row = int(raw_input("Guess Row:"))
guess_col = int(raw_input("Guess Col:"))

print ship_row
print ship_col

# Write your code below!
if guess_row == ship_row and guess_col == ship_col:
    print "Congratulations! You sank my battleship!"
if guess_row not in range(0, guess_row - 1) or \
    guess_col not in range(0, guess_col - 1):
        print "Oops, that's not even in the ocean."
elif board[guess_row][guess_col] == "X":
    print "You guessed that one already."
else:
    print "You missed my battleship!"
    board[guess_row][guess_col] = 'X'
    print print_board(board)

#2

guess_row not in range(0, guess_row - 1)

#3

if guess_row not in range(0, guess_row - 1) or \
guess_col not in range(0, guess_col - 1):
print "Oops, that's not even in the ocean."
THIS IS WRONG.
What your code does is it checks if the guess_row andr guess_col is in the range (0,guess_row-1) and(0,guess_col-1),which is meaningless.
For example let the guess_row and Guess_col be 2 and 3.
Now your code checks if guess_row is not in range(0,2-1) i.e (0,1) which is true since 2 does not lie between 0 and 1 and prints "Oops, that's not even in the ocean."
Same is the case with guess_col.It checks if it is in range(0,3-1) i.e (0,2) which is true since 3 does not lie between 0 and 2 and prints "Oops, that's not even in the ocean."
CORRECTION:
if guess_row==ship_row and guess_col==ship_col:
print "Congratulations! You sank my battleship!"
else:
if guess_row not in range(5) or guess_col not in range(5):
print ("Oops, that's not even in the ocean.")
elif board[guess_row][guess_col]=="X":
print "You guessed that one already."
else:
print "You missed my battleship!"
board[guess_row][guess_col]="X"
print_board(board)
NOTE:Be carefull about the indentation.
