12. Not Again(Invalid Syntax)

#1

from random import randint

board = []

for x in range(0, 5):
    board.append(["O"] * 5)

def print_board(board):
    for row in board:
        print " ".join(row)

print_board(board)

def random_row(board):
    return randint(0, len(board) - 1)

def random_col(board):
    return randint(0, len(board[0]) - 1)

ship_row = random_row(board)
ship_col = random_col(board)
guess_row = int(raw_input("Guess Row:"))
guess_col = int(raw_input("Guess Col:"))

print ship_row
print ship_col

# Write your code below!
if guess_row == ship_row and guess_col == ship_col:
    print "Congratulations! You sank my battleship!"

else:
    print "You missed my battleship!"
    board[guess_row][guess_col] = "X"
    print print_board(board)

if guess_row not in range(5) or guess_col not in range(5):
    print "Oops, that's not even in the ocean."

else:
    print "You missed my battleship!"
    board[guess_row][guess_col] = "X"
    print print_board(board)

elif board[guess_row][guess_col] = "X":
    print "You guessed that one already."
else:
    board[guess_row][guess_col] == "X"
    print "You missed my battleship!"

When I run it, it says:

File "python", line 45
elif board[guess_row][guess_col] = "X":
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

I can't see whats wrong with it, any ideas?

#2

I think here is already a mistake, because if i try this in my set, X isnt implemented into the board

#3

you need two "=" instead of one since it's an elif statement.

#4

your mistake is simple. you need to use two "=" signs. Right now, you have a declaration statement. You want a comparison statement instead. (and you need a colon after the statement) Try:
elif board[guess_row][guess_col] == "X":

#5

else:
print "You missed my battleship!"
board[guess_row][guess_col]="X"
if guess_row not in range(5) or guess_col not in range(5):
print "Oops, that's not even in the ocean."
else:
print "You missed my battleship!"
board[guess_row][guess_col]="X"
print print_board(board)

elif board[guess_row][guess_col] == "X":
    print "You guessed that one already."
else:
    board[guess_row][guess_col] == "X"
    print "You missed my battleship!"

File "python", line 41
elif board[guess_row][guess_col] == "X":
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

I honestly have no idea what is wrong with my code

#6

You can't have so many else statements concurrently...

#7

You are trying to use an elif statement AFTER ending an (if/)else statement. You can't use "else if" after "else". Else has to be the LAST thing/one.

#8

(AND/) Or use proper indentation.

#9

let me know if that doesn't help/work/fix it.. (you'll have to write an @ + myname so I get notified)

#10

one can use as many else(s) reqd or as many if(s) reqd PROVIDED ONLY IF

PROPERLY INDENTED
