        $('div.list').append('<div class="item">'+ '"'+toAdd + " !" +'"' +'</div>');

This line might be tripping up the lesson checker:

$('div.list').append('<div class="item">'+ '"'+toAdd + " !" +'"' +'</div>');

We can reduce it a little to just this,

$('.list').append('<div class="item">' + toAdd + '</div>');
